Hello folks! What you are looking at is a complete restoration and modernization of the most iconic version of one of the most iconic vehicles Jaguar has ever produced: the 2006 XJ Super V8 Portfolio. This vehicle was rescued from the San Diego auto museum after nearly a decade of sitting. In restoring this car, nearly every single common failure component of these vehicles was addressed and\/ or upgraded. Other aspects of the car were modernized in ways that retain stock functionality but add features that make the car more usable with current tech.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

About the Portfolio<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Based on the top spec Super V8, the Portfolio took things up a notch and was Jaguar’s attempt to make a no compromise luxury vehicle with every option available in their arsenal for the time. The Portfolio also has the distinction of being the last vehicle off the Brown’s Lane assembly line. Indeed, it was a Portfolio in this exact spec that took the honor. Portfolios can be distinguished from their lessor counterparts by noting the following features:<\/div>\n

  • 400W Alpine Sound System – Upgraded from the standard Alpine system and included Dolby Pro-Logic Surround<\/li>\n
  • Conkor Leather – Appears black in many photos but is actually a rich dark brown<\/li>\n
  • Alcantera Headliner, A, B and C Pillars as well as various interior trim pieces<\/li>\n
  • Satin Finish Black Walnut – A pleasant departure from the high gloss burled walnut found in other trims<\/li>\n
  • Cherry Black or Winter Gold Paint<\/li>\n
  • Sport Exhaust Tips<\/li>\n
  • Machined Alloy Fender Vents – These were the pre-cursor to the plastic fender vents that were added to later year cars<\/li>\n
  • 20″ Forged Polished Aluminum Wheels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Other options that weren’t unique to the Portfolio but that are found in every 2006 Portfolio:<\/p>\n

      About the Car<\/strong><\/div>\n

      I found this car on Facebook Marketplace in September of 2024. It was sitting in the storage area of the San Diego auto museum, where it had been sitting – covered – for a few years. The car was sitting without an engine and was pretty dirty outside but was covered and significant care was taken by whoever originally took it apart, with heavy moving blankets draped along the interior to ensure it would not be damaged. I arranged to buy the car from the museum and with it, two engines.<\/div>\n

      Shortly thereafter, I tracked down the original owner who gave me more of the back story on the car. He blew the original engine and was in the process of rebuilding it but also purchased a backup engine with lower miles just in case the original was not able to be rebuilt. He said the car sat indoors at a friend’s shop for several years until he eventually decided to move on and ultimately donated the car to the museum.<\/div>\n

      About the work<\/p>\n

      Initially my plan was to simply drop an engine in the car and enjoy it but as with most projects like this, there are a lot of things that can be done “while you’re in there”. The more I dug into the car, the more I wanted to do to improve it. The beauty of Ford era Jaguars is that parts are really inexpensive and I already had the engine out. Why good enough? Why not great? And then once I got to great I asked myself, why not perfect? And so that’s what I set out to build: the best mechanical, most usable example of an X350 XJ Super V8 Portfolio that can be had.<\/p>\n

      Every common issue these cars have has been addressed. Valley coolant hoses? Replaced. In fact, all hoses replaced. Air suspension? Entirely new. Not a conversion to coilovers either. This is an entirely new air suspension with a brand new air compressor. What about the headliner that’s drooping in every single 2000’s XJ? Not only was it professionally re-wrapped but it was re-wrapped in the identical color, with the same quality alcantera and every other alcantera piece in the vehicle was removed and re-wrapped as well. This includes the A, B and C pillars, various trim pieces, B pillar sills and even the sun visors.<\/p>\n

      Attention to detail didn’t stop there. So many cars like this have rear entertainment systems that are barely usable these days unless you carry a collection of DVDs around with you. That’s no fun. To that end, I added a USB\/ HDMI combo jack inside of the rear center console which allows you plug in almost any HDMI device that can be powered by USB. The vehicle includes two: A Roku stick and a game emulator with two wireless controllers that includes emulation (and a bunch of games) for Super Nintendo, Nintendo, PlayStation, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Sega, Sega Genesis, Sega CD and a slew of other systems. The HDMI input replaces auxiliary 1 on the rear control panel. Auxiliary 2 is retained. This looks completely stock and operates completely stock. You can watch the HDMI input on either screen or both. You can watch that on one and watch a DVD on the other. It’s a ton of fun and modernizes the rear screens to the point where they are once again usable.<\/p><\/div>\n

      Does it stop there? Oh boy… No. As you might imagine from the comprehensive list below, I have a hard time stopping. This was a fun project for me. You might be wondering if it has any issues. The answer to that is no. I’ve put a little over 1200 miles on it now over the course of about 6 months and it’s been entirely trouble-free. Everything on it works. Every single function. Every single feature. All of it just as it was in 2006.<\/p>\n

                                                Front and rear bumpers repainted. Several body panels had very small dings and scratches from over the years. My body guys knocked out pretty much everything within reason and painted about 40% of the car. This is a very easy color to match. The paint job is indistinguishable from stock.

                                                What it needs… I polished one wheel. Clear coat is coming off on the other three. Have them polished. I tried finding the little plastic tabs that you grab to pull up the side blinds. I can not find replacement blinds at all. It’s probably a 15 minute job per side. I just can’t find them. The blinds work fine. It’s just the little pull tab that’s missing. I’d also do rear wheel control arms but I had to draw the line somewhere. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

                                                The car drives absolutely incredibly. Probably the closest to a new experience as you can get without a Time Machine. It <\/span>is an exceptional opportunity for someone that loves the Portfolio. The market has been pretty wild on these over the last several years with some fetching close to $200,000 for low mileage examples. This isn’t a low mileage example. Which is great because you can drive and enjoy one of the best vehicles to ever bare the leaper without the guilt of tacking on miles and the peace of mind of having a vehicle that is nearly new mechanically speaking. It is – I like to think – the best of both worlds. Have your cake and eat it too. In fact, eat it on the picnic tables in the back seat.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
